FLOOD PREPARATI= ON!

Very substantial snow packs h= ave accumulated over large portions of the province. The Provincial River Forec= ast Centre continues to forecast well above normal spring runoff for the Fraser River in May and June. Extended periods of high temperatures and heavy rain will increase the risk of flooding. Parents are encouraged to take steps now. Fi= rst determine if you live in the flood risk area and if so make the recommended preparations as described at the Provincial Emergency Preparedness website:= http://www.pep.gov.bc.ca. Additional information on the Fraser River Flood Preparations is available at the City= of Chilliwack website= : http://www.gov.chilliwack.bc= .ca/main/. Information about school activities during the flood risk period will be included on the Chilliwac= k School District web= site: http://www.sd33.bc.ca/. It is expected = that schools will continue to operate as normal. However, plans and preparations= are being made at this time to respond quickly in the event of flooding near on= e or more schools.

The School District has been working in conjunction with the City of Chilliwack, Fraser Valley Regional District, officials from the Hospital, RCMP and other essential services to monitor the potential flooding situation and to devel= op emergency procedures.  The School District’s Emergency Flood Planning Committee has been activated to monitor the flood risk, discuss our district preparations and formulate a response plan.

Our first concern is for the = safety of our students and staff.  Sh= ould the potential for flooding pose a significant risk to any site, we would er= r on the side of caution and close the school.&= nbsp; Once the threat has passed and/or the water level receded, we would evaluate the school reopening, relative to the end of the school year.

As the river water rises to l= evels which are considered to be of concern the School Dis= trict will give notice to sites at increased risk including AD Rundle, Bernard, McCammon and Robertson.
